Conclusion
The changes brought about by the collapse of the communist regime in 1989 have affected the ideal of woman in a number of ways and hypostases, including her role as target and instrument of state repression. Whereas, in communist times the women who accepted serving as tools of state repression were seen in positive terms and those who suffered the brunt of these campaigns were negatively depicted, since 1989 former victims have been praised, whereas former victimizers have been denounced. In Romania, key players in fleshing out this discourse of victimization/condemnation have been the male public intellectuals, who act as gatekeepers to the small community of communist-era dissidents and opponents. This chapter has argued that philosopher Gabriel Liiceanu has played the role of a gatekeeper when the cases of Mona Musca, a communist-era secret informer, and Herta Müller, a communist-era victim of the Securitate, have been publicly discussed in 2006 and 2010, respectively. Because of Liiceanu, who depicted her as âthe spy of all spies,â Muscaâs political capital vanished and she was forced to put an end to her political career, renouncing public office. While facilitating the publication of her books in Romanian translation through the Humanitas press, Liiceanu tried to undermine Müllerâs reception in Romania, due to her opposition to the âresistance through cultureâ model promoted by the Paltinis group, but her international recognition and personal frankness turned the tables in her favor and exposed the intellectuals supportive of passive opposition to criticism for their unwillingness to directly and openly denounce the human rights abuses of the communist regime.
